Learn legal, contractual, financial, production & staff management for horticultural enterprises

Develop a capacity to apply legal, contractual and staff management considerations to demonstrate informed interpretation and analysis, critical thought processes and an understanding of complex issues in relation to the management of a range of different sectors of the horticulture industry.

Prerequisite: Operational Business Management I

The ability to manage staff is pivotal in any enterprise - commercial or public. This is especially important since law has become increasingly complex. The modern horticultural manager also needs to have a firm understanding of basic legal practices.

This course focuses on building your capacity to manage staff and legal aspects within the horticultural enterprise.

Study this course to:

  • Develop a capacity to apply legal, contractual and staff management considerations to a horticultural enterprise.

  • Demonstrate informed interpretation and analysis of operational procedures.

  • Apply critical thought processes and problem-solving skills.

  • Understanding complex issues in relation to the management of a range of different sectors of the horticulture industry. 

Prerequisite: Operational Business Management I or some relevant experience in basic business operations management.

This is module can either be taken as a module in one of our other study programs or as a standalone course. It is ideal as a Professional Development program for people working in the horticulture industry anywhere in the world.

Aims

  • Discuss, examine and evaluate legal systems and laws that are relevant to the management of horticultural enterprises.
  • Examine, evaluate and debate the elements that comprise the making of valid contracts in the horticulture industry.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principal areas of employment legislation
  • Compare financial management requirements for a series of optional horticultural enterprises in two or more different countries.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principal areas of performance management & staffing within a business environment.
  • Determine and apply an understanding of motivation theory to better manage staff performance within a horticultural business environment.

Lyn has a broad expertise in horticulture and crop production. Her first job was on a mushroom farm, and at university she undertook a major project studying tomatoes. She has studied nursery production and written books on hydroponic production of herbs.

Rosemary Davies (Horticulturist)

Rosemary trained in Horticulture at Melbourne Universities Burnley campus; studying all aspects of horticulture -vegetable and fruit production, landscaping, amenity, turf, aboriculture and the horticultural sciences.
