Amenity Horticulture Trends

Amenity horticulture focuses on the aesthetic, environmental, and recreational improvement of spaces and it is currently undergoing a paradigm shift. The modern approach is to responsibly blend ecological conservation, sustainability, and climate resilience along with technological advancements and human well-being.

Due to this public parks, urban spaces and private gardens are evolving to be more functional, resilient, and deeply attuned to nature.

Sustainability is no longer viewed as a ‘buzz word’ it is fast becoming the foundation of design with a focus on biodiverse, resilient, landscapes active in supporting local eco-systems and encouraging pollinators.

Some supporting approaches include:

  • Smarter planting choices to create plantings that can cope better with an increasingly volatile climate, and also buffer the extreme effects of climate change.

  • The reduction of chemical use.

  • The use of indigenous plants, or low water use perennials, and drought tolerant planting and xeriscaping.

  • Gravel gardens to minimise water use whilst producing and aesthetically pleasing garden.

  • Replacement of lawns with ‘ wildflower meadows’ or ground covers.

  • Edible and functional landscapes within both public spaces and private gardens.

  • Mix of edibles plants within other planting rather than in a defined vegetable garden.

  • Vertical garden and living walls to reduce heat island effects, reduce air pollution and for beauty.

  • Maximalist rather than minimalist planting to encourage beauty and biodiversity in both flora and fauna.

  • A focus on factoring in biophilia and ecotherapy

TECHNOLOGY

New approaches in amenity horticulture are increasingly embracing the use of technology, for example:

CAD Systems improving presentation and contributing to some aspects of the landscape design processes

Computer systems used for personnel management, logistics, financial management and personnel management (e.g. Teams)

‘Smart’ irrigation to reduce water wastage. The use of Wi-Fi connected smart irrigation controllers that adapt to live weather observations is now standard.

AI driven tools used for remote monitoring (e.g. data analysis and pest and disease monitoring)

Plant & environment monitoring sensors.

Automated watering and misting systems (e.g. for vertical gardens).

Soil sensors to monitor moisture levels and nutrient requirements.

AI driven apps to help identify plants as well as pests and diseases

Robot Applications (e.g. robotic mowers).

Precision Horticulture (e.g. Drones used for surveying, monitoring, applying fertilisers and pesticides)

EDUCATION

Excellent foundational knowledge and skills are essential to work in this ever-evolving industry. An aging workforce and persistent skills shortages are contributing to the problem of fewer capable technicians at a time where there is an increasing demand for horticultural technicians.   Since the disruption of covid there has been a scramble among traditional (face to face) colleges, to rapidly develop online components to their training; but the quality and diversity of what has been developed has varied greatly.

Here at ACS, we have almost 5 decades of experience developing and delivering distance education. We have come to understand how people learn and can be best supported to learn remotely.  With all of the changes happening in technology, we've been working hard to adjust both how we teach and what we teach, to provide the most current and relevant learning journeys possible in garden care, maintenance, management and design.

OPPORTUNITIES & REWARDS

The opportunities and rewards for a rewarding career in amenity horticulture are many - particularly at a technician or management level. Whether you seek a career in the public or private sector and whether working for yourself or someone else - you may be surprised with how exciting the possibilities are.
